Are you planning on visiting St. John and looking for a place to stay? The beautiful white-sand beaches and gorgeous natural views are some of the reasons why the island (and U.S national park) is one of the most visited islands in the Caribbean.
Although the island doesn't have airports like St Thomas and St Croix, you still have some options when it comes to choosing all-inclusive resorts, luxury hotels, or villas. Apart from these options you also have the choice of night camping in certain areas. There are many options depending on your budget, number of guests, and required accommodations.
With that in mind, here are some of the top places to stay at in St. John, US Virgin islands and areas to consider:
Cruz Bay Vs. Coral Bay
The two most common areas to stay in St. John are Cruz Bay and Coral Bay. Cruz Bay is the more popular and commercialized option as it's where the ferry from St. Thomas arrives. Since it gets more visitors, it's not surprising it often has the most housing choices, better nightlife, and significantly more restaurants and bars. Coral Bay is farther out from the ferry entrance, with fewer restaurants but more hiking options since it's closer to the U.S Virgin Islands National Park area and much less crowded.
Cruz Bay has more closer beaches to it than Coral Bay. Although the ones farther out on the north shore coast tend to amount to a similar distance between the two bays. No matter where you plan on staying in St John, I would highly recommend you rent a car. The island isn't like St Thomas, where taxis are abundant in all directions.
Since St John has a huge main road and is quite secluded, it can be challenging to find a taxi coming in the direction you want to go. But if you stay in Cruz Bay, it's easy to find taxis that head to the beaches, but it's not always the easiest to find taxis headed back in that direction, especially late in the evening.
If it's your first time visiting St John, it's a better idea to stay in Cruz Bay. You're within walking distance to many restaurants, bars, dive shops, and shopping. Coral Bay is more laid back and also more isolated. Regardless, you can find plenty of gorgeous beaches, swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities anywhere you stay in St John.
